Cryptocurrency Wallets: Hot vs Cold Storage Explained

A crypto wallet doesn't actually store your coins — it stores the private keys that prove ownership and let you sign transactions. Understanding that distinction is the first step to understanding wallet security.

Hot Wallets

Hot wallets stay connected to the internet — exchange accounts, browser extensions, and mobile apps fall into this category. They're convenient for active trading but carry more exposure to hacks, phishing, and exchange failures.

Cold Wallets

Cold wallets — hardware devices or even paper backups — keep private keys offline entirely. They're slower to use for frequent trading but dramatically reduce the attack surface for long-term holdings.

A sensible rule many traders follow: keep only what you're actively trading on an exchange, and move longer-term holdings to cold storage. Our Cryptocurrency Market course covers wallet setup, seed-phrase security, and common scam patterns in detail, since security mistakes here are rarely reversible.
